After merchandise products such as team jerseys and monkey caps, die-hard Venetian Link bracelet fans now have another way to show off their allegiances: diamond-studded sports jewellery. And there is an Indian connection here.

Shrenuj, a Mumbai-based diamond company, recently formed a joint venture with Israel’s SWA Trading, for developing and marketing sports diamond jewellery to woo soccer lovers globally. The JV will make special diamond cuts for clubs such as InterMilan, Manchester United, Real Madrid, Barcelona, who collectively have a fan following of over a billion people worldwide.

The diamonds will be specially cut and polished to resemble the logo of the individual club and set in jewellery items such as medals, trophies, rings, pendants, and bracelets, said a senior company official on condition of anonymity as he is not authorized to speak to media. The specially designed sports accessories, which have a wider choice for team sponsors, clubs and consumers, will be patented world wide, he added.

The move — the sports jewellery industry is valued at over $2 billion worldwide — could come as a booster for the diamond industry which is just recovering from the slump in sales seen during the recent liquidity crisis. The slow demand prompted retailers in the US and Europe to cut purchases, affecting Venetian Link necklace of units in India. The small revival of sales in this region and increased purchases by high net worth individuals in India and China has prompted workers who had left this sector, to return.

The diamonds for the sport clubs will be cut and polished in a diamond manufacturing facility of Shrenuj. Also, there is a dedicated Strategic Business Unit (SBU) exclusively controlling the supply chain and promotion of the sports jewellery and mementos, co-branded with various national and international sports clubs and team sponsors. The company has created a dedicated team for product development and manufacturing of these products.

When contacted, Vishal Doshi, Executive Director, Shrenuj & Company, declined to comment on financial nitty-gritty of the deal. However, he confirmed the development saying, “These are special cut diamonds for creating three new varieties dedicated to sports only. We are encouraged by the overwhelming response from various sports clubs and sponsors from Europe and Middle East where this game is widely popular.”

The company is in process of developing cricket ball and tennis ball diamond cuts and will soon be available to the Indian consumer in retail stores, said Mr Doshi. The sports jewellery industry is valued at over $2 billion worldwide.

Trapz, a division of Israel based SWA Trading, which is an expert at unusual tiffany Notes Dangle Key ring cuts, has developed the three unique diamond cuts for Shrenuj, which will polish the new cuts in India and distribute the jewellery in India and Far East. SWA Trading will concentrate on matured market like the US and the Europe, said the company official. Diamond industry has recently started doing well, especially in small diamonds segment says, Pinakiranjan Mishra, Partner, Risk Advisory Services, Ernst & Young.

Sports diamond jewellery is a very niche market, which can cash in on mass fan following of foot ball and elite fans of golf and tennis, added Mr Mishra.

Spain, with its myriad of influences and epic history, is a
country with a diverse gamut of sights and sounds to offer its
45 million tourists who visit every year. An area where this can
be seen in particular is in its museums and galleries, a rich
history of art and culture has left Spain a huge legacy in this
department with names such as Dali, Picasso and Miro leading the
list:

Guggenheim, Bilbao:

Now one of the most easily recognised buildings in Europe, the
Guggenheim in Bilbao is a work of art itself. Opened in 1997 and
designed by American architect Frank O. Gehry, the museum has
been a lynchpin for the city’s redevelopment programme and in
many ways the museum symbolises the new, modern Bilbao. Standing
right in the city centre alongside the river the museum offers
11,000 sqm of exhibition space over three galleries. The museum
has a body of permanent work always on display as well as large
exhibitions which run for months at a time. Currently on View is
the “Aztec Empire” comprising of a huge body of work from the
pre-columbian civilization. Previous exhibitions have
encompassed an eclectic blend of art with work from the likes of
Matisse, Michelangelo, Reubens and Warhol having graced its
corridors.

Dali Theatre-Museum, Figueres

Located in Figueres, the Dali Theatre-Museum is the broadest
collection of his work in the world tracing his first artistic
forays, the surrealist period and even including some of the
last works painted before his death. Figueres also happens to be
Dali’s hometown and the decision to build the museum from the
ruins of the town’s Spanish civil war-damaged theatre, didn’t
seem like a difficult one. Indeed, it was here as a boy where
Dali first had the chance to display his work so is a fitting
place to exhibit the cream of his life’s work. Dali himself
supervised the building and creation of the museum turning it
into a huge surrealist playground. Dali also created some works
specifically for the museum itself – the “Mae West Room”, the
“Wind Palace Room” and the “Monument to Francesc Pujols and the
Rainy Cadillac” are larger than life and superb examples of
Dali’s fertile imagination.

Reina Sofia, Madrid

One of Madrid’s most celebrated museums, the Reina Sofia houses
a huge collection of contemporary art. Once the city’s San
Carlos hospital, the museum was originally founded in 1986 but
underwent a serious revamp in 1990 at the hands of British
architect, Ian Ritchie. They envisioned creating something to
rival the Tate in London and the Pompidou centre in Paris, and,
with 36,000 sqm of exhibition space, it’s one of the world’s
largest museums and an extremely impressive place. The most
famous painting housed there is undoubtedly Picasso’s Guernica,
an immense cubist work and war protest and probably the great
painter’s most famous work. Visitors can also see the many
preliminary sketches that he made for the work. Other great
Spanish artists on display are Dali, Miro and Orteiz to name but
a few as well as Spain’s most important artists of the last 20
years.

Fundacio Joan Miro, Barcelona

One of Spain’s most important artists and often overlooked due
to the lure of Picasso and Dali, the Fundacio Joan Miro in the
Montjuic area of Barcelona is well worth a visit. Spacious and
set in its own grounds, the museum is a step away from the
regular metropolitan museums and galleries – the white building
built around an internal courtyard is typically Mediterranean.
Huge amounts of natural light help to bring Miro’s surrealist
works to life and the museum also houses some of his sculptures
and ceramic works as well as the paintings he’s more famous for.
The museum also has a permanent exhibition space in which the
foundation gives special attention to Spain’s more experimental
artists – not everyone’s cup of tea, granted, but worth a look
if you’re visiting the museum.

Jewel of the seas, a noted ocean liner from American Royal Caribbean Sea, is famous for its ten-storied glass sightseeing place, which provides the whole mysterious sea sights for passengers at one time. On this luxury ship, you can really enjoy yourself fully. Well, it is the history now. Fortunately, here is a same shining journey for you. During this journey, your eyes will be busy with those jewels shining like precious treasures in the sea. Now, let’s begin.

From the old tales, human being is from the sea millions of years ago. Therefore, there is an eternal feeling between the sea and us, so the fairy tales have decorated our life all the history. With the heart of sea, the human being is running all the time. The most costly jewelry is called “the Sea Heart”.

Mysterious and mighty sea attracts our attention and meanwhile keeps a long distance from us. For the first class jewelry designers all over the world, the sea is surely a great temptation. From the shape of sea to its saint sole, from the creatures in sea to beautiful tales, all are perfect arts, the gifts, from the God. Of course, designers are trying their best to catch spirituality from the sea. Just simple lines and shapes bring about vivid jewelry to life. All pieces of jewelry gain their lives, because of the sea.

First, look at the jewelry from the tiffany. Colorful earrings in the shape of a pearl gain some spirituality form the water drop. From all the pretty cuts, a drop of full water is shining. Then we have the Tiffany Fish pendants. Also from the sea, they are pieces of art works when born. The natural form of water drop, together with the blue, green and purple, the sea is walking toward you with its special smelling. There is the Fish Wood Bracelet, too. From the hands of Frank O. Gehry, the noted architect in the first class, all these “fish” will bring you back to the memories in children time.

Can you feel the sea now? Maybe you have engaged in them and enjoyed yourself.

Spain is much more than crowded beaches, flamenco dancers and bullfights. It’s a diverse and spectacular country; the north resembling the green and rolling hills of Ireland while the South presenting great Moroccan landscapes and admirable architecture. This incredible country has a lot to see and appreciate but below is a list of few compiled destinations that find its place in the best of Spain list.THE ALHAMBRA PALACE – GRANADAThe ‘Red Palace’ in Granada is an important historical monument and one of the best tourist attractions that Spain have. The Alhambra has been under the control of both — the Muslims and the Christian and because of that the place has buildings of different architectures. The gardens in this place are world-famous and unbelievably beautiful.THE MEZQUITA – CORDOBAThis is a present-day Christian church that he used to be a Mosque in the past. The arches and pillars that are crossed to arrive at the Catholic shrines is magnificent Arabic work. The building was made in 796 A.D. and it is an attraction that you must not miss watching.BARCELONABarcelona is considered one of the most beautiful cities that Spain and world have. Known for being both historical and modern, the city is connected with excellent air links and high-speed train network.LA TOMATINA – BUNYOLThe festivals that conjure up here are the craziest one. The place is known for having giant tomato fights that take place each August transforming a quiet and serene Bunyol village into a fanatical town. The village has a small population of 9000 that swells to around 30,000 during festivals.SKIING – SIERRA NEVADAIt is a wonderful place where you can ski on the snow in morning. From Sierra Nevada Mountains, the beach can be reached within an hour, where you can have fun water skiing under the sun.GUGGENHEIM MUSEUM – BILBAOThis impressive structure was designed by and American architect named Frank O. Gehry. The structure is situated in the heart of the Bilbao and it sits on an area of around 32,500 m². The structure is known for its unusual amalgamations of curves and blocks that is covered with Italian scales.ROMAN RUINS – MERIDAThe Roman Theater that has the capacity to hold around 6000 spectators is one of the premier sights of Merida.

In my first week in Bilbao I was amazed at how many things there were to see and do around the city. Before I arrived I was especially interested in visiting the world famous Guggenheim so I was more than happy when I was able to visit this art museum with the interns and students of Instituto Hemingway. On arrival I was taken in by the unusual, very contemporary design of the building itself. It was designed by the American architect Frank O. Gehry. As Bilbao is a port town, the building is intended to resemble a ship. The random curves and titanium plates of the building also give the impression of a fish. The first thing I noticed however was the large statue in front of the building which resembled a dog and which was covered completely in flowers. I later learned that this was a work by Jeff Koons entitled Puppy. As we entered the building I was pleasantly surprised to find that there was no queue despite the warnings hour long waits I had read on tourist websites. The receptionist was very friendly and kindly provided us with a very useful audio guide and a place to check in our bags and coats leaving us free to wonder around the museum. On the ground floor there was a room filled by very large and striking sculptures which formed the work entitled The Matter of Time by Richard Serra. The work consists of eight extremely large steel sculptures which form curving and spiral paths which you can walk round. On the same floor there is a room with small scale models of the sculptures where you can see the shapes of the curves and spirals without walking around the sculptures themselves. The ground floor also displays the Guggenheim’s permanent collection which includes German Expressionist and Abstract Expressionist Art, abstract and Surrealist painting and sculpture, the Impressionist and Post-Impressionist works of Justin K. Thannhauser and important works by Rebay and Katherine S. Dreier. I found Marc Chagal’s Green Violinist (Violiniste) and Franz Marc’s Yellow Cow particularly striking in this collection. The second floor there is an exhibition which focuses on contemporary art throughout the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s with famous works such as Mark Rothko’s Untitled and Andy Worhol’s One Hundred and Fifty Multicoloured Marilyns. This exhibition began on the 16th February this year and will run until the 16th January 2011. At the moment the third floor is dedicated to a temporary exhibition of the sculpture series Gluts by Robert Rauchenberg which will run until the 10th September this year. In Gluts, Rauchenberg creates unusual and interesting sculptures from scrap metal such as old road signs and parts of bicycles found in junk yards. The sculptures were inspired by Rauchenberg’s criticism of the greed which caused an economic recession in Texas caused by a surplus or ‘glut’ in the supply of oil available in the market. I found this exhibition particularly intriguing so if you have the chance to visit the museum at some point this year I would highly recommend it. All in all I feel that the Guggenheim has rightfully earned its reputation as a world class contemporary art museum and is well worth visiting during your stay here in Bilbao.Naomi RendellStudent at the University of Edinburgh, currently in Bilbao

Instituto Hemingway invites all its students studying Spanish to a new cultural activity: a visit to the Guggenheim museum to discover the works of the American artist Cy Twombly. We will be meeting at the school at 4pm on Thursday the 29th of January. The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, designed by the American architect Frank O. Gehry, is a magnificent example of the most outstanding architecture of the twentieth century. The building represents a real landmark thanks to its innovative design and is the perfect backdrop for exhibiting contemporary art.Cy Twombly, born in Virginia in 1928, is one of the most relevant and influential artists active today. In the early 1950s he trained at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, the prestigious Arts Students League of New York and at the Black Mountain College in Ashville, North Carolina. He won a scholarship to the Fine Arts Museum in Virginia thanks to his first exhibition in 1951 at the Kootz gallery in New York. As well as his work on paper and canvas, Twombly also created sculptures which he covered with white paint, inspired by the Ancients. Since then, Twombly has divided his time between living in Rome, Gaète and Lexington. This artist mixes genres – his work is not only abstract, or purely illustrative, but a paradox in form. He shows a great fascination with the world of classical literature and history, which has an important influence on his language and artistic creations. The expressive richness of Cy Twombly’s work has its roots in a metaphorical language full of symbols which reflect mythological themes, the passage of time and places of personal interest for him. History, poetry, classical mythology and the Mediterranean countryside are some of the sources which the artist draws on to create his works. Many of his titles reflect these creative origins. Cy Twombly is one of the most important artists of his generation.

There was not too long ago when the city of Bilbao, part of the beautiful Basque County and situated in the north of Spain, started going through a major transformation, in which it is now catching significant attention and it is already on its way to becoming one of the most notorious cities in all of Spain. The inauguration of the Guggenheim Museum in 1997, such an extraordinary and innovative work by the Canadian architect Frank O. Gehry, definitely gave a completely new and much more modern face to Bilbao, making the city to stand out among very important and well known cities in the world such as New York, Venice, Berlin, and Las Vegas, now sharing the same privilege of being home to a Guggenheim Museum. In Bilbao, the Guggenheim Museum is located at a wonderful square by the River Nervión with lots of greenery. In the front and back parts of the museum, there are two gigantic sculptures; one being a kitten completely covered with natural flowers and the second is the recreation of the eight legged spider called “Mamá.” Other characteristics that give a very special touch to the area are the bridges de La Salve, that offers quite a beautiful light show itself that can be seen at night, and the bridge Zubi-Zuri, designated for pedestrians only, features a very modern design of iron cables painted in white, known as the white arched bridge and it also displays a floor with glass details; the bridge is also illuminated at night. Although the Guggenheim Museum marks a period of a “before and after” in the city and plays a big role in the “effort of the revitalization” of the city, that is not the only reason why Bilbao has been catching a lot of attention lately. There have also been many other urban transformations, among them the new Airport, the Metro System, the Tramway, and the restoration of the whole margin of the river, which are already becoming internationally known, as well as the Palacio Euskalduna, that resembles a ship, La Torre de la Diputación and Las Torres de Isozaki, and there are still many more transformations in store for the very near future. Although many transformations have been and will keep taking place in Bilbao, it does not mean in any way that the city is loosing its roots and identity. On the contrary, its roots and identity are becoming stronger and richer by the day. With so much to do and see in Bilbao, one just can’t get enough of it. Walking through the margin of the river, one can get the best of “both worlds,” the old (commonly known as “Casco Viejo”) and the new, beautifully contrasting the antique and the contemporary. The City Hall (Ayuntamiento), inspired by the “Opera de Paris,” and the University of Deusto lay by the margin of the river, and among with extraordinary Churches, the Cathedral, the Basilica of Begoña, Palaces, Theatres, Museums, and the Abando and the Atxuri train stations, represent historical symbols that can be seen throughout the city of Bilbao. Bilbao also offers a breathtaking view from the Monte Artxanda besides many public squares where people can relax and children can play. For those who are fans of gastronomy and the night life, there are plenty of restaurants, bars, pubs and night clubs to choose from. Typical Spanish food consists mainly of seafood and the very popular “tapas” and pintxos.”Spanish is the official language spoken in Bilbao. On a much happier note, Bilbao has been home to many foreign students who wish to learn Spanish and experience the Spanish way of life. The number of foreign students has been increasing greatly and they always claim to be very happy for choosing Bilbao as their new home for periods that can last from a few weeks to months. No wonder why Bilbao has been calling so much attention of visitors as well as countries all over the world. The latest and greatest news is that Bilbao is in its way to go to Expo Shangai 2010 that has as a theme “Better city, better life,” and in which it will take place in the district of Pudong along the river Huangpu starting May 1st until October 31st of 2010. Bilbao has been elected “as a model of urban renovation and thanks to the extraordinary transformation experimented in the city in the last 25 years.”

As part of the cultural activities which complement the Institute’s educational programmes, Instituto Hemingway organises free fortnightly visits to Bilbao´s Guggenheim museum. All students who are taking the Spanish courses will have the opportunity to get to know the museum’s permanent collection and the new temporary exhibitions which are foreseen for this autumn/winter. All these works are housed within an exceptional piece of architecture. Two temporary exhibitions are foreseen for this period: “Art in the USA: 300 años de evolución” and “Chacun à son goût”.”Art in the USA: 300 años de evolución” is an exhibition which will show an attractive collection of approximately 200 works which come from different private and public collections in the United States. Divided into 6 historical periods, USArt will demonstrate how art from each era both was reflected and contributed to a complex visual narration of a nation during a period of discovery, growth and experimentation.x visual narrative of a nation during times of discovery, growth and experimen”Chacun à son goût” is an exhibition which has been organised for the 10th anniversary of the Guggenheim museum in Bilbao. The work focuses on promoting the creativity of contemporary Basque artists, inviting them to produce specific works which interact with the spaces of the museum. The selection will demonstrate that the chosen artists are authors of international vocabularies and they respond to and question the tensions of their specific locus. But furthermore we will have the opportunity to enjoy the Guggenheim’s permanent collection which Richard Sierre leads and resides within an impressive building, the work of the North American Frank O Gehry. We remember that the Guggenheim museum is situated in a piece of land of 32 500 metres squared which is located on the same level as the Nervión river. That is to say 16m below the height of the city and which is crossed at one point by the colossal La Salve Bridge, which is one of the main entrances to the city.

Barcelona
There is no superior starting place for your travel to Spain than the grand and enchanting streets of Barcelona. There is never a dull moment in this city that literally never sleeps, especially in the summer months. Barcelona is studded with the unmistakable modernism of Antoni Gaudi, who single-handedly landed the city on the architectural map. A stroll down the grand avenue Passeig de Gracia will take you directly in front of both Casa Batllo and Casa Mila, which are incredible feats of art and design and fully accessible to the public. Make reservations to have cocktails and watch the sun set on the Alice In Wonderland-like rooftop of Casa Mila (only available for the summer season). Wind your way through the narrow passages of the Gothic Quarter, the oldest part of town, until you find the overwhelming and unmistakable Gothic Cathedral (just remember to watch your pockets!).
Just an hour north of Barcelona in the town of Figueres is Northern Spain’s most interesting and unique museum. The Dali museum is so extraordinary because it was designed and constructed by the artist himself and the collection of his works is unsurpassed anywhere else in the world. The coastline north of Barcelona, extending to the French border, is known as the Costa Brava and is one of the Mediterranean’s most exclusive and beautiful vacation destinations. Additionally, Catalonia’s countryside is spotted with superb Spanish wine vineyards and olive groves. Once you fall in love with Barcelona, it will be extremely difficult to leave; however, there are a few other gems in the north to explore in order to have really traveled Spain.
San Sebastian (Donostia)
A blend of cosmopolitan chic and sophisticated resort town, San Sebastian offers all the luxuries of a big city while providing the Atlantic coastline with its most popular beach getaway. San Sebastian, the heart and soul of the Basque region, is widely known for its world-class restaurants and irresistible tapas bars; its location just south of the French border has added a unique flare to the culture and cuisine found nowhere else in Spain. Just a short bus ride inland takes you to Bilbao, home of Frank O. Gehry’s spectacular architectural triumph, the Guggenheim Museum. This is one stop that must be made when you travel Spain!
Pamplona
The captivating words of Hemmingway and the dangerous art of bull running are inescapable symbols of this historic township. Another cultural staple of the Basque region, Pamplona should be a stop on as you travel Spain in July when La Fiesta de San Fermin (The Running of the Bulls) takes place over 14 days. The population of 250,000 explodes to over 1 million, so reserve a place to stay early or simply do what the locals do: eat, drink and dance in the streets until the sun comes up and the bulls begin to run!
Months would be needed to travel Spain’s diverse cultures and distinct regions. With more limited time, these fascinating destinations provide an intimate window into the authentic Spanish way of life.
