Designer finds her calling in jewelry

There is one room in the house that belongs solely to Kelli Freeman.

It has boxes, storage bins and cabinets filled with one thing: beads.

These beads are threaded onto gold or silver chains or hung gracefully from earring clasps.

This is Freeman’s playroom — or some would say workroom — but because she loves making tiffany jewelry jewelry, it is not work at all.

“I never dreamed I would be making jewelry,” said Freeman, sporting her handiwork from her ears. “Honestly, it just kind of happened.”

Freeman has always loved jewelry and accessories.

One day, she started examining some of her pieces.

As she traced the various money clips jewelry, including necklaces and earrings, Freeman realized she could make it herself.

That was in the summer of 2005, and now Freeman is fully committed to making jewelry. This past year she created a name for her work, Kelli Freeman Designs.

“It kind of evolved” from the experimentation, she said. “It consumes me. I love it.”

She doesn’t have to go far for work, and she doesn’t need to get dressed up.

“It doesn’t feel like I’m working,” she said, adding that she doesn’t sit at home all day watching soap operas.

She works on different pieces, but never stresses herself out or forces herself to work.

“I have to feel it,” she said. “I just don’t want to make it to make it, and I’ve been lucky earrings that I feel inspired all the time.”

You could describe her work as eclectic. Every piece is handmade, and therefore unique.

Freeman has to keep up with the latest fashion trends to find what colors and designs are “in” for the season.

Many of her necklaces are long, and she creates dangling hoop earrings that are popular with the locals.

“It’s so exciting to see people I don’t know wearing my work,” Freeman said.

Freeman has marketed herself out in the Golden Isles with four stores on St. Simons Island carrying her jewelry and three in Statesboro.

One day she hopes to go national, and maybe even open up her own pendants jewelry store filled with her one-of-a-kind look.

Another side:

Kelli Freeman:

–Wants to learn to create rings.

–Loves to shop, even if it’s window shopping.
