Fairfield jewelry store robbed

Police are searching for an armed robber, dressed in a tan suit, who held up a Tunxis Hill tiffanys jewelry store this morning.

After cordoning off the Tunxis Hill Corner Shopping Center, local police called for assistance from a Bridgeport police K-9 unit in an effort to pick up the robbers trail.

Deputy Police Chief Gary McNamara said that a man, wearing a suit and mask, calmly entered Shaw Jewelers shortly before 11 a.m.

The man herded several store employees into a backroom at gunpoint and then proceeded to scoop up an undetermined amount of cash and jewelry before fleeing, police said.

McNamara said there were no customers in the store at the time and no one was injured.

Merchants and customers in the shopping center were shocked to learn of the robbery.

“I can’t believe it,” said Themi Kolitsas, owner of Steffano’s Restaurant, two doors down from the necklaces jewelry store in the shopping center. “This is a very quiet area with no problems.”

Following the robbery, a hand-written sign was taped to the door of the jewelry store that read: “Closed.”

Even though there were few customers at the shopping center at the time of the incident, McNamara said he believes someone must have seen the robber before and after the holdup.

“We would appreciate any information we can get to help us in our investigation,”frank gehry he said.

Anyone with any information about the heist is asked to call the Police Department Detective
