The victim’s name wasn’t released Sunday.

The man, Mark A. Warner, 35, was being held in Erie County Prison on charges including homicide.

The shooting happened Sunday a little after 3:30 a.m. at 523 W. 17th St.

A call about a female who wasn’t breathing came in to the Erie County 911 Center at 3:34 a.m.,tiffany, a dispatcher said.

Erie police said the shooting appears to have occurred during a domestic dispute between a boyfriend and girlfriend. Police believe the woman was killed in the driveway of the house, where they said Warner lived upstairs.

He was located later Sunday in a car in Cambridge Springs, Erie police said.

Warner was taken into custody by state police from Meadville and brought to Erie, where he was charged and then arraigned by Erie 4th Ward District Judge Tom Robie, authorities said.

Details about Warner’s arrest weren’t available from state police.

Besides homicide,tiffany cuff Links, Warner was charged with assault, recklessly endangering another person and possessing an instrument of crime, police said.

An autopsy was performed on the woman Sunday, Erie County Coroner Lyell Cook said.

He said she suffered a single gunshot wound. Cook wouldn’t say where on her body the woman was shot.

The coroner also wouldn’t release her name, pending notification of family, or other details about the shooting.

"Police are still working on it,tiffany rings," Cook said Sunday.

Erie police were releasing little information,tiffany pendants, although they had remained at the house throughout the day and had obtained a search warrant for it Sunday afternoon.

Two police cruisers were parked in front while investigators searched inside and out.

Yellow crime tape stretched across the front and back of a driveway to a residence on the west side. Police were examining several areas, including around a tow truck parked near the rear of the house.

Neighbors outside across the street said they hadn’t seen or heard anything when the shooting happened.

Cook said the victim died at the scene of the shooting and was pronounced dead Sunday at 4:40 a.m. by Erie County Deputy Coroner Dennis Suscheck.

Cook said he will be meeting today with police and Erie County District Attorney Jack Daneri and that more information will likely be available after that.

The woman was stabbed inside an apartment just after 6:30 p.m., according to authorities.

Officer Jon Agnew,tiffany necklaces, spokesman for the department, said detectives were at Eastside Landing Apartments late into the night and were investigating the incident as a homicide.

A possible suspect was detained at the scene and was being questioned, along with a witness, Agnew said. He declined to say what object was used in the fatal stabbing,discount tiffany, or where the woman was injured. No details, including gender,tiffany rings, were given about the potential suspect, and no charges had been filed by late Sunday.

The name of the woman, who died after being rushed by ambulance to St. Joseph Regional Health Center, will not be released until family members have been notified, Agnew said.

Agnew was asking for anyone with information to contact police at 209-5300 or Crime Stoppers at 775-TIPS.

Police are investigating the slaying of a woman whose body was found at the bottom of the basement stairs of a Port Richmond rowhouse.

Marion Frew,tiffany key rings, 66, had been stabbed in the neck, police said.

She was pronounced dead at 10:44 a.m. Sunday inside the rowhouse on the 3400 block of Weikel Street.

Investigators are looking at robbery as a possible motive.

Consider the fact that the Atlanta-based retailer of sofas, beds, mattresses and dining room tables expects to finish 2010 with fewer stores than it began with in January.

"We are not in a store square footage growth mode at all," Jenny Parker,tiffany money clips, Havertys’ senior vice president of finance, said Wednesday. "It’s all about repositioning and being in the right places."

One of the places the retailer wants to be to peddle its middle to upper-middle priced furniture products is Columbus. More specifically, at Columbus Park Crossing on the city’s north side, in space vacated in early 2009 by bankrupt electronics retailer Circuit City.

Parker said Columbus has been on Haverty Furniture Companies’ expansion radar for years, fitting its geographic footprint and distribution network. It even took a look at Columbus Park as the shopping center was coming out of the ground nearly a decade ago.

"We just couldn’t make the numbers work at that point," she said. "But with the Circuit City closure we’re able to get some good rent rates. And looking also at the city and surrounding region, it really looks like it’s ready to have some stable and solid growth for the next few years."

The 125-year-old Havertys chain won’t use all of the 40,000 square feet of space used by Circuit City, Parker said. The showroom will be somewhere between 31,000 and 33,000 square feet.

The company has just begun to remodel the property at 5555 Whittlesey Blvd., on the west end of Columbus Park. It purchased a city building permit a week ago, listing $661,843 worth of construction.

And occupying a former Circuit City store is nothing new for the retailer, the Havertys executive said. In fact,tiffany pendants, old Service Merchandise storefronts and grocery stores have been turned into furniture stores at one point or another.

"We can do a lot of things that are pretty amazing when we are finished," Parker said. "And I don’t think this will be anything too challenging for us. It’s just a matter of time and effort and making sure that we get it right, because once we set the store we don’t want to have to come back."

No firm date has been set for the opening, she said, with the company shooting to be in operation by Thanksgiving. When it does open,tiffany bangles, there will be about 20 employees, including sales, office, delivery people, as well as service technicians.

The company will also begin the process of familiarizing local residents with its brand and services.

"Even though we’re kind of close to Columbus, some people don’t realize our history," Parker said. "But we are a large company, and we get really good values on the products we buy. And we’ve been around a long time."

The Havertys executive stressed the company doesn’t have a strategy of coming into the market and crushing its competition.

"That’s not what we’re about," she said. "But we do have a niche,tiffany key rings, and we feel like we serve that niche pretty well."

The company now has 119 stores in 17 states. That’s two fewer stores than it had in 2009.

"My father worked at the mill on Second Avenue," said Gray, 73,tiffany money clips, on Saturday from his home in Point Breeze. "We lived Uptown on Webster Avenue; all he had to do was go down the hill to work."

Gray said the walk wasn’t far, but it was steep. "But nobody missed work back then."

Gray was 12 at the time of the great Thanksgiving snowfall — the worst in the city’s history at 27.4 inches.

"The snow did not hit all at once like today’s storm, it accumulated over a couple days’ time, which meant the best thing of all was no school for days," Gray said.

Gray and his two younger sisters attended Robert L. Vann School on Chauncey Drive around the corner from his home.

"We spent most of our time involved in all kinds of snowball battles. They were very sophisticated, involving all the kids that lived within a three-block radius," he chuckled.

No one had to rush to Giant Eagle to stock up on groceries, as many people canned their food. There were small grocery stores on most corners, and the owners typically lived on the second floor.

"At 12, it was fun time, a magical time. Today, I had a double car driveway to shovel, that’s not that much fun," Gray said.

Ray Shinhofen said he remembers skiing off the slope that led from Colby Street in Summer Hill down to East Street in the valley.

"We had a ball for days, there wasn’t a thing you could do outside that we didn’t try," he said.

Shinhofen, 76, an architect in Squirrel Hill, remembers building intricate igloos and snowmen to pass the time.

"We were located at the upper most regions of the North Side; the only way for my dad to make it to work was to climb down a narrow path to East Street to catch the old West View Trolley."

Shinhofen, 16 at the time and a junior at Perry High School, said he and his friends would walk his father down the hill and then spend the rest of the time enjoying the time off from school.

"At the tail end of the storm, I decided to take the girl I was dating in high school to my Aunt Kay’s in Mt. Troy for a family dinner. Years later she told me that it was that adventure that clinched it for her," he said, explaining that the girl, Mary,tiffany key rings, later became his wife, to whom he has been married for 56 years.

"That snowstorm turned out to be a pretty good thing for me," Shinhofen said.

"But real life is not like that," said Ketna Shukla, aunt of Tripti Mishra, a Brahmin girl from Uttar Pradesh, who is searching for her life partner on a matrimonial website. "Real life is about who you will wake up with every day and whether you will be entitled to a life whose rules, regulations and duties are familiar to you…giving a daughter in marriage is not easy. Girls have to adjust to too many things already. Tripti says she doesn’t have anyone in mind and has left the decision to us. If she had found someone, then it would be different. But if we are going to look, we will want to make it easy for her. Marrying within the caste will make it a little bit easy."

Hers is not a lone voice to argue that love, when nurtured in familiarity, has a better chance of surviving. No studies have been done to prove this theory, but it has many takers.

On Shaadi.com, a matrimonial website, about 83% of profiles have listed their caste details and when the sub-caste option was activated a few months ago, "more than 40% edited their profiles to specify their sub-caste as well", said Valini D’souza, manager of corporate communications for Shaadi.com portal.

Murugavel Janakiraman, founder of BharatMatrimony.com, an online matrimonial forum that has at least two million profiles and special interfaces that offer caste-based selection to 451 communities, explained that many factors have conspired for a revival of interest in caste-based marriages: the rising number of divorces,tiffany earrings, the challenges of modern living, the impatience with differences and unwillingness to change, and the tools of technology–telephones, the Internet, jets and faxes–that expand choices and allow members to look for spouses within their communities.

And people are willing to use every technological option to ensure the "right marriage" for their children.

For instance, when Shobha Mehta’s son reached a "marriageable age" in New York and asked her to find him a spouse, she sent word to her relatives and friends in the old city of Jaipur, in Mumbai and Delhi. For four months, she looked at "biodatas" of young girls of her community on Shaadi.com, BharatMatrimony.com, exchanged emails, juggled time zones and conversed with the parents over the phone before flying out to meet the "short-listed" candidates. She never looked at profiles outside her community.

And when she saw Shital, a shy, soft-spoken 19-year-old, she knew the search had ended. "She had a gentleness to her. I just knew this was it," said Mehta, fully aware that she had used every tool of modern technology to find a match for her son in the oldest form of marriage. "The children are happy. It is good that the Internet helped bring them together. How does it matter how they came together, as long as they stay married?" she asked.

It is this unsubstantiated fear–that divorce rates are rising because of inter-caste marriages–that has led to a renewed interest in caste marriages, said Janakiraman.

"It may or may not be true. But I don’t want to take a chance," said Balraj Oberoi, a 26-year-old Hindu Khatri from Hoshiarpur,tiffany cuff Links, who teaches mechanical engineering for a living and is clear that he wants to marry another Khatri. He refused to disclose the name of his college, but said: "If I fall in love with someone, it’s different. But if I don’t find someone like that, then I want to make sure that cultural compatibility is there. After all, we want to live a peaceful life. If the person comes from the same caste, you can take many things for granted–lifestyle, culture, rituals, and customs–everything is the same. Half the problems are solved. There are no nasty surprises later."

Such as the one Pari, a Vaishnav Vania received when she married a Punjabi man. "They had been dating each other for six years, when they decided to tell their families," said Urvee Majmudar, a 25- year-old first cousin of Pari, who is now looking for her own spouse on Shaadi.com. "Both families agreed to the match and they got married. After that, all the torture began. They are asking her to bring gold, jewellery, cars, electronics and all sorts of things. They don’t feed her either–sometimes she comes to our home at night (on her way to her job at a business process outsourcing firm) and eats with us. This is in an educated family, in Mumbai, behaving like this. It makes me want to cry. But seeing her, I have learnt my lesson. I am not seeing anyone, but even if I was, I would not marry outside my caste. I just don’t want to risk being miserable in a strange way of living…"

Like her, young women, in India and abroad, say they are acutely aware of the challenges of a social structure that is intensely patriarchal, that already expects them to play many roles while juggling careers, and that they simply do not want to make marriage any more challenging than it needs to be. "Already, I am struggling with Indian and American identities. There are different social expectations from me inside my family and outside. Why on earth would I make it even more complicated," asked 27-year-old Ashima Agrawal, a computer engineer in Dallas, who says it would be nice to find an Agrawal man in the US. "Then maybe we could relate to each other better, I think. Isn’t it?"

This doubt gnaws at many second-generation immigrants, who struggle at the time of marriage when they have to choose between identities: marry a foreigner and drift away from the culture they came from or marry an Indian chosen by their parents (mostly from the same community) and become bound, ever more closely to their parents and their way of life.

And to help these young people, caste-based organizations in the US, the UK, Australia, New Zealand and Europe have "youth chapters" that organizes galas, dances,tiffany bangles, dinners, picnics and parties, places where young men and women of the same caste intermingle. "No one really talks about it like that, but of course we hope it will lead to marriages," said Harish Dhayal, chairman of the Association of Jats of America.

Others, such as the Mahers, a warrior caste from southern Gujarat, have set up a worldwide matrimonial portal for their community.

"From conversations in forums online, I noticed that young people lead very busy lives and they don’t have the time to meet like-minded people in a traditional way. So,tiffany bracelets, I decided to add a matrimonial option to the Maheronline website," said Ram Odedra, a UK-based engineer, who had created the website as a university project. The website has around 4,000 profiles of Mahers, all of them looking to marry another Maher. His website also helpfully details the "who can marry whom" rules of the community, to ensure that Mahers do not inadvertently marry the wrong Maher sub-caste.

There are many other communities like the Mahers –some set up community portals online, some print magazines, some print newspapers, some print directories and databases–and each word is a black thread stitching together a community diaspora, here and there, in India and the world. Candidly, community leaders admit that behind all the work is a hope, the hope that the community will live when children marry within its folds.

Altoona police said the man told the woman he was using the money to get a business started, pay his father’s medical bills, settle a loan and build a house for them.

The woman believed she would be marrying the man, who didn’t tell her he already was married, police said.

The man later told police he used most of the woman’s money to pay off gambling debts.

Brian R. Pool, 44, of Coon Rapids, was charged this week in Eau Claire County Court with a felony count of theft by false representation.

Pool is free on a $5,000 signature bond and returns to court Aug. 4. As conditions of bond, Pool cannot contact the woman and must limit his travels to Minnesota and Wisconsin.

According to the criminal complaint:

The woman told police she met Pool about 10 years ago when she was working at an Eau Claire restaurant. Pool was a food service delivery man who often made stops at the restaurant.

Pool,tiffany rings, who was using a fictitious last name,tiffany key rings, became romantically involved with the woman in July 2008.

Pool told the woman he was divorced and had a 15-year-old daughter.

The woman told police she gave Pool money on several occasions:

- $2,000 in September 2008 for missing work because he was sick.

- $7,000 in July 2009 to use toward a business he was starting in California.

- $13,000 in September to pay his father’s hospital bills after his father was in an accident with a drunk driver.

- $26,000 in October so he could obtain more credit for his business.

- $18,800 in late October, most of which came from the woman’s 401k account at her workplace, for his business. It was the woman’s understanding she was going to move to California to marry Pool and be his business partner.

- $10,tiffany money clips,000 in December, which she drew from a life insurance policy, to pay off a claim Pool had with another woman. Pool said he had an affair with the other woman and they had a child together.

- $7,000 in April, which was the rest of her 401k account. The woman couldn’t remember why Pool wanted the money.

- $37,discount tiffany,000 in May, money she used from selling her house, which Pool said would go toward the construction of their new house.

All the transactions were made in cash, and most were done at the woman’s Altoona home.

In late May, Pool called the woman and said he needed $15,000 to get out of jail. It was at that point the woman realized she was never going to get her money back.

With the help of a friend and her sister, the woman did an Internet search and discovered Pool was using a fictitious name and was married.

Pool told Altoona police earlier this month he used the majority of the woman’s money to pay off a gambling debt. Pool said he had none of the woman’s money left.

If convicted, Pool could be sentenced to up to five years in prison.
