Local businesses here are hoping for an economic boost by hosting a downtown Construction Clothesline Sale.
The Ocean Springs Chamber of Commerce came up with the marketing idea to combat the bracelets woes facing the merchants.
“We want to create some visible activity downtown,” said Cynthia Dobbs, chamber spokesperson.
Art, hats, jewelry, purses and lamps will hang from long clotheslines along the downtown sidewalks. Local restaurants will also participate by hanging up menus, muffins and sandwiches for customers to purchase.
The Construction Clothesline Sale will begin today and run through Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.
“January is typically slow for businesses but the economy and construction work has really affected us,” Dobbs said. “This week will be like a big party downtown and a shopper’s delight.”
The main downtown intersection at Washington and Robinson avenues has been closed for nearly two cufflinks for work crews to complete the Downtown Streetscape Project.
Chamber representatives said the construction work has made the downtown area look like it has been closed for business.
“The businesses are making every effort to let people know that they are open and want business,” said Dobbs. “We hope that actual clotheslines hanging up on the street will attract customers.”
City leaders said the Downtown Streetscape Project intersection work should be complete by next week if weather permits.
A recent gas line rupture and heavy rains have delayed completion of the intersection that will feature elevated brick pavers, lights and landscaping.
