One of the men suspected of robbing a Burlington tiffany and co jewelry store at gunpoint Monday morning was arrested in Danville, Va., on Tuesday, and a second suspect has been identified.
Marcus Dwayne Pyles, 19, of Wigwam Drive, Danville, was taken into custody without incident, according to a Burlington Police Department news release.
Pyles was charged with robbery with a dangerous weapon and second-degree kidnapping. Police are still looking for a second suspect, Antoine Lanier Hall, 19, of Albert Street, Danville, who also has warrants out for his arrest. Investigators said they think Hall is in the Danville area, the release states.
Warrants allege that Pyles and Hall walked into Eden money clips Jewelry in New Market Square shopping center off South Church Street in Burlington at about 10:30 a.m. Monday, demanding money and jewelry. Witnesses told police both men were armed with semi-automatic weapons.
There were three employees and a customer in the store at the time. The employees complied with the suspects’ request. The two men left the store with an “undisclosed amount” of jewelry and money, according to the release.
Before the men left the store, they forced the employees and the customer into a bathroom at the back of the store. No one was injured.
Since that time, Burlington police have been investigating the robbery. Police received photos of the suspects from surveillance footage taken in a nearby jewelry store, which was not robbed, just prior to Eden Jewelry incident.
Burlington police worked Monday and Tuesday with the State Bureau of Investigation, the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, the U.S. Secret Service, the Danville Police Department and the Sheriff’s Department in Pittsylvania County, Va., and were able to identify the two suspects by using the surveillance photos.
Some stolen property was allegedly found when Pyles was arrested. Police are working to identify where the items came from. It’s possible the two men might have been involved in other robberies.
“There was some recovery of some pendants jewelry with the first arrest,” said Burlington Police Assistant Chief Greg Seel. “If we find that it wasn’t taken from Eden Jewelry, we will have to determine where it came from. Right now, it’s too soon to say.” Anyone with information about the crime or where Hall can be located should contact the Burlington Police Department at 229-3500, the Danville Police Department at 434-799-6510 or CrimeStoppers at 229-7100.
