"We have a brand new group of guys and right now we’re trying to find ourselves."

Saturday the Lumberjacks hosted Hillcrest Lutheran Academy in their second home game in as many days and the Jacks fell to 0-2 after a 2-1 setback.

Friday BHS lost 2-0 to Little Falls.

"Friday we played as a team for 15 minutes and on Saturday we played that way for 25 minutes. It was an improvement," Toward said.

The 25-minute span came at the end of the game and produced Bemidji’s only goal, a free kick just outside the box by Kyle Fodness with 12:52 remaining in the game.

HLA scored in the first half and added a goal on a header off a corner kick five minutes into the second stanza. The visitors held an edge for the next 10 minutes but Bemidji began to take control with 25 minutes to play.

"Right now everybody is looking for somebody else to take charge and be a leader," Toward said. "What I would like to see is nine, 10 or 11 guys on the field become that leader."

Connor McNallan handled the goaltending duties Saturday and stopped 20 shots.

Bemidji will return to action Tuesday when it hosts Detroit Lakes at 4 p.m.

For the second straight day the girls soccer team posted a one-sided victory. Friday the Jacks slapped Little Falls 6-1 and Saturday they dismantled Walker-Hackensack-Akeley 10-0 in Walker.

Erin Booth had five goals, including two in the first half which helped BHS bolt to a 4-0 lead at intermission. Andrea Hanson had the other first-half tallies.

Josie Spry had a pair of goals in the second stanza and Casey Palmer scored one.

Palmer tended the net in the opening period and had three saves. Whitney Morin took over for the final 40 minutes and made one save.

"We outshot Walker 36-4 and weren’t truly tested," said BHS coach Kelly Schoonover. "It was nice to get off to a good start and be 2-0 because it enabled the girls to get comfortable playing with each other.

"The real test will come Tuesday when we head to Moorhead."

That game is set for a 5 p.m. start. Bemidji’s next home appearance will be Thursday when it hosts Detroit Lakes at 5 p.m.

Steph Frey finished second in the 200 IM and third in the 100 breast to lead the girls swimming and diving team at Saturday’s season-opening action at the Willmar Invitationa.

In addition to BHS and the home team the meet attracted St. Cloud Tech,rings, Melrose, Sauk Centre and Minnewaska-Morris.

Jana Hendstrom earned second place in the diving as did Lexie Hendricks in the 500 free.

Placing fifth for the Jacks was the 400 free relay team of Hendricks, Maris Jahner, Alicia Papke-Larson and Frey.

Hendricks was fifth in the 200 free as was Erin Arndt in the 200 IM and the medley relay unit of Papke-Larson, Frey, Jahner and Katie Krause.

Bemidji will return to action Tuesday at Brainerd.

Bemidji scored 27 points and trailed only Hibbing at Saturday’s eight-team Crookston Invitational.

Hibbing won with 37 points while Park Rapids scored 20, Thief River Falls 17, East Grand?Forks 15, Crookston 13, Moorhead 11 and Perham 0.

Jessica Solberg took the title at second singles. Claiming seconds were Courtne Solberg at first singles, Amy Frosaker at third plus the second doubles tandem of Claire Baumgartner and Haley Pollock.

Placing third were Claudia Bellew at fourth singles,Beads necklace, Katie Ditmanson and Emma Nielsen at first doubles and the third doubles unit of Jenna Lee, Lauren Lund and Francesca Huerd.

BHS?will be at the Brainerd Invitational Monday.

The Bemidji volleyball team overcame the loss of power hitter Jess Yost Friday to outlast Perham 3-2 in the season opener at Perham.

Only three points into the match Yost sustained a high ankle sprain and she spent the rest of the night on the sidelines.

Her teammates, however, were able to hang on for a 25-15, 30-28, 16-25, 17-25, 16-14 marathon victory.

"It was an amazing match," said BHS coach Teresa Colligan. "It was a long night but winning that fifth set was a good way to end it."

Jenna Sagedahl contributed 43 set assists and Kellie Morehouse converted 16 of them into winning kills.

Allie Heifort had 12 kills and five blocks and Liz Hirt added 10 kills and two aces.

Caitlin Hadrava finished with six kills, four blocks and two aces. Nicole McDonald also had a pair of aces.

Meghan Wannebo had 41 digs while Hirt had 28 and Sagedahl 20.

"The team faced adversity from the beginning of the match Friday but their performance was a testament to their character," Colligan said.

The Jacks return to action Thursday when they host Detroit Lakes at 7:15 p.m.

The BHS cross-country teams will head west Monday as the boys and girls squads take part in the Moorhead Invitational starting at 10 a.m.

Bemidji’s boys team returns seniors Andy Berube,Charm pendant, John Buckanaga,pendants, Alex Schoneberger and Jake Urban plus junior Dan Clemenson from last fall’s section team.

The girls team will be led by senior Bailey Drewes and junior Kim Truedson. Jenna Truedson, an eighth grader,earrings, also is expected to be among Bemidji’s top performers.

"It’s the busiest weekend of the year," said Beth Bridges,pendants, senior marketing manager at South Plains Mall. "The stores are looking great, and there’s a lot of new merchandise."

The big style item for girls heading back to school this fall is "jeggings," which Bridges described as leggings styled to look like jeans.

But, she added, there are plenty of stores offering traditional jeans and other back-to-school clothes.

The 72-hour reprieve from sales taxes will expire at midnight Aug. 22 and applies not only to brick-and-mortar retailers but to Internet and catalog sellers doing business in Texas.

Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts Susan Combs estimated that shoppers statewide will save more than $59 million on purchases over the weekend.

Clothing and footwear priced at less than $100 is eligible for the break.

And the state has several special purchasing rules to keep in mind.

– Tax-exempt items already on layaway qualify for the break if the buyer pays off the layaway balance during the weekend.

– Special order items to be delivered after the holiday ends also qualify if the customer pays the bill in full before midnight Aug. 22.

– Prepackaged combination sets or kits that are made up primarily of tax-exempt items are eligible for the break.

– Backpacks only qualify if they have straps allowing them to be carried on the user’s back. Messenger bags are also tax-exempt. Bags that could be defined as luggage, such as brief cases, gym bags, purses or backpacks mounted on frames,money clips, are not eligible.

– Shoppers buying more than 10 backpacks must present a certificate stating the backpacks will be used by elementary or secondary students.

– Purchasers using a business account — business credit card or business check — to buy school supplies must also provide an exemption certificate stating the items will be used by an elementary or secondary school student.

UT administrators and coaches met on Tuesday to open discussions on the possibility of the event at Thompson-Boling Arena.

"We’re investigating the opportunities," Lady Vols athletic director Joan Cronan said. "If we do it, we’ll probably do both the men’s and women’s (programs) together."

The last time Tennessee held a preseason event was in 2005.

Cronan said she anticipates there will be more meetings on the possibility of the event and what it would consist of before any decisions are made.

UT men’s coach Bruce Pearl has taken a stance in the past that he’s not an advocate of "Midnight Madness,bracelets," as he would rather use the NCAA-allotted time to prepare his team for the season.

"I’d rather lock the doors at midnight and have a hard practice and see who pukes first on the court," Pearl once said,Atlas charm bracelet, jokingly.

But Pearl has also said he’ll do whatever university leadership deems best for the programs,tiffany, and said that under the right circumstances he would be interested in a preseason event that would both entertain the fans and be useful to the players.

If UT does hold a preseason basketball event prior to this season, it’s unlikely it would be at midnight.

The annual performance series is now taking subscriptions and selling single-event tickets for its ninth season, which begins Sept. 9. Featured this year are everything from military jazz and ventriloquism to family magic, tribute artists and show tunes.

"It’s good," program director David Yandle said of the series, "and it’s been really good for the area."

In its first year, the series drew about 125 subscriptions, or season tickets to the shows. Last year that number grew to more than 700.

"We’re getting people from Gastonia, Lake Wylie, Tega Cay, Rock Hill," Yandle said. "We’re getting people from everywhere now."

The list of international, national and regional artists includes new and returning acts. The most expensive ticket is $15, ranging all the way down to the U.S. Army Jazz Ambassadors and child tickets for the Tarradiddle Players — both free.

For series technical director Rick Hamrick, choosing a favorite act from the lineup may be difficult.

"Kathy Mattea’s concerts are always great," he said of the Oct. 2 show. "We look forward to having her return this year. Alex Depue and Miguel De Hoyos will be outstanding."

Annual staples should be a big draw, Yandle said, like the tradition of bringing in a top flight military band. The Jazz Ambassadors play Oct. 16.

"We have all the military bands," Yandle said. "We’re batting a thousand on that. You can’t beat the military bands."

On March 29, a Patsy Cline tribute comes from Katie Deal. On Feb. 8,bracelets, the "Iron Man of the Mask," Franc D’Ambrosio, will perform from his extensive career, which included a decade as the lead in "Phantom of the Opera." For Yandle and Hamrick, the success of past series help bring in such stellar artists.

"We have continued to increase our subscriber base since our first season," Hamrick said. "The artists have commented on the size and enthusiastic response from our audiences."

The series also benefits from grants from the Southern Arts Federation and South Carolina Arts Commission, which help with artist fees, and provide Arts in Education opportunities involving artists and students. Those grants help keep the subscription cost in the 1,500-seat auditorium to $40 for nine shows.

"David and I feel that the arts series is an asset to the community, and we are fortunate to be able to present these shows with the support of the Clover School District and the community," Hamrick said.

Lynn Trefzger, 7 p.m. Sept. 9, $15

Trefzger is a ventriloquist/comedienne with a trunk full of zany characters that have accompanied her to stages throughout the country. Her vocal illusions were first brought to national audiences on TV’s popular "Star Search." Since then she has shared the stage with artists including Jeff Foxworthy, Ray Romano, the Smothers Brothers and Drew Carey. She has appeared on ABC, TNN, A&E, VH1 and Lifetime television, along with the 2009 feature film "I’m No Dummy" with Jeff Dunham and Jay Johnson.

Kathy Mattea, 8 p.m. Oct. 2, $15

Mattea,money clips, the beloved Grammy-winning singer of such classics as "18 Wheels And A Dozen Roses" and "Where Have You Been" says her new album offered her a "re-education" in singing. That album, "COAL," is one of those rare records that is a re-education for the listener, too, a record that reshapes the way we think about music, reminding us of why we love it in the first place.

The Jazz Ambassadors is the United States Army’s premier big band. This 19-member ensemble, formed in 1969, has received great acclaim both at home and abroad performing America’s original art form, jazz. Concerts by the Ambassadors are designed to entertain all types of audiences. Custom compositions and arrangements highlight the group’s creative talent and gifted soloists. Their diverse repertoire includes big band swing, bebop, Latin, contemporary jazz, standards, popular tunes, Dixieland, vocals and patriotic selections.

DePue & De Hoyos, 8 p.m. Nov. 16, $15

Alex Depue began taking classical violin lessons at age 5. He won his first major competition at age 10, and at 16, he won a competition that allowed him to play at Carnegie Hall. Miguel De Hoyos performed his first solo concert when he was 16. He has performed with La Guitarra Por El Mundo traveling throughout Mexico and Europe on a cultural exchange program. This duo’s music is a jaw-dropping tour de force of Latin, classic rock and show tunes.

Their new CD, "Underground Whispers." is rock ‘n’ roll on fiddle and guitar featuring "Dust In The Wind" by Kansas, "Stairway To Heaven" by Led Zeppelin, and "All I Ask Of You" from "The Phantom Of The Opera."

April Verch Band, 8 p.m. Jan. 11, $15

Ontario’s Ottawa Valley is steeped in cultural history, including a musical style and step dancing heritage influenced by the French, Irish, Scottish, Polish and German settlers of this region in Canada. Verch, a modern pioneer of this tradition, is emerging as one of the top female artists in the roots music genre. She has built a repertoire rich in original tunes influenced deeply by the treasure chest of musical jewels passed down through the generations.

Tarradiddle Players: "The Commedia Princess and the Pea," 7 p.m. Jan. 27, $5 (children 12 and younger free)

In this funny, fast-paced show,pendants, the Tarradiddle Players put a slapstick spin on Hans Christian Andersen’s classic fairy tale. The lonely prince wants to find someone to marry, but potential princesses must first get past his mother, the Queen, and her long list of tests. Will any of them be royal enough to turn a cartwheel, sing "Happy Birthday" while hopping up and down on one leg, and feel a teeny, tiny pea under a big stack of mattresses?

Franc D’Ambrosio, 8 p.m. Feb. 8, $15

Affectionately known as "Phantom Of The Opera’s" Iron Man Of The Mask, D’Ambrosio was awarded the distinction as the "World’s Longest Running Phantom." This accomplishment was immortalized in a cemented hand ceremony and he retained this title for more than a decade. He was discovered by talent scouts from Paramount Pictures in the chorus of his first Broadway show. Francis Ford Coppola immediately cast him as Anthony Corleone, the singing son of Al Pacino in the film "Godfather III." Not only did D’Ambosio have the honor of starring in the film, he also sang the Academy Award-winning theme song, "Speak Softly Love" (Brucia la Terra).

Family Night XII: "The Magic of John Tudor," 7 p.m. March 15, $3 ($8 for whole family)

"The Magic of John Tudor" has been enjoyed across North America by theater audiences, Fortune 500 companies, conference attendees and thousands of school students since 1987. Tudor’s shows are a "magical journey," an energetic mix of imaginative stories and state-of-the-art magic. His original magical pieces are theatrical; from fairy tale romance to struggles with cosmic forces, pulling the heart strings and touching the funny bone.

A Closer Walk With Patsy Cline, 8 p.m. March 29, $15

America’s favorite Patsy Cline tribute star, Katie Deal, is backed by a band of singers and musicians. She interacts throughout the show with Little Big Man,Charm pendant, a disc jockey from her hometown in Winchester, Va., as well as outrageous standup comics who do warm-up acts for her concerts and radio shows. This happy, loving tribute to country music’s most endearing superstar features 21 of Cline’s greatest hits including "Sweet Dreams," "Walkin’ After Midnight," "I Fall To Pieces," "Crazy," "She’s Got You," "Seven Lonely Days," and the title song, "A Closer Walk With Thee."

It was Henryville’s second match, while it was Trinity’s season opener, and the home team took the win 200-237.

Lady Cougars coach Becky Ward had the minimum number of players to form a team score, and she said the results were what she expected.

"I thought the girls did well for just having two practices in," Ward said. "When you don’t pick up a club out of season, it’s going to take three or four matches to get where they could be. They can do it, it’s just you have to practice so your misses get a little bit better."

Hannah Currao was low for the Cougars with a 54,pendants, followed by Breanna Davis’ 56 and Christina Molinari’s 61. All three of those girls are seniors, while the fourth golfer, Brennyn Pollert, is a freshman, and she carded a 66 in her first golf match.

Henryville’s Katie Cleveland was medalist with a 47.

"I didn’t see all the holes (the three seniors) played because they know what’s going on,Bead bracelet," Ward said.

She spent most of the round with her freshman.

"I thought she did great, especially on this golf course the first time ever playing golf,tiffany," Ward said of Pollert. "She hit a lot of good shots, too. She hit the proper shot 50 yards from the green and would just hit it too hard, and then sometimes hit it too hard coming back."

Ward said it will take some work in practice to get Pollert going with the right technique.

"That just takes a little time," she said. "She probably could have knocked off I’d say eight shots easy just with that kind of stuff. A lot of my kids are like that."

Ward also is sure that her other girls will lower their scores as match play continues.

"They will because we’re going to stand out there (at practice) and hit 50-yard shots until the cows come home," she said. "I know that’s where our weakness is. It always has been. I’ll work with their swings as much as I can at practice."

The Lady Cougars are off until Aug. 13. That match is scheduled to be with Henryville and Southwestern (Hanover) at home, but Ward said the location could change.
