MELBOURNE, Feb 10 AAP – Hot models wearing hot fashions in hot and silver bracelets conditions.

Melbourne’s Federation Square was hot on all counts for the launch of the city’s annual fashion festival program on Wednesday.

At times wilting under 30 degree heat and high humidity, young models strutted out wearing black and white minis inlaid with fake jewels and gold and silver metallic detail.

The sweaty conditions meant Melbourne’s fashion crowd for once sought a place in the shade from which to cast their eye over proceedings, as they readied themselves for the festival to begin on March 14.

After a couple of years braving the threat of the recession that never came, silver cufflinks hoped this festival would “cast off the shackles of doom and gloom, making a powerful and positive statement”.

Festival director Karen Webster said it had been a beacon of optimism for the industry during the last year of “cultural and economic shift”.

The festival will include seven runway at Docklands, with shows open to the public.

International designers, such as Calvin Klein’s Francisco Costa and former silver earrings chairman and chief executive Christian Blanckaert will feature, as well as Australian fashion industry icons and emerging designers.
