A house cleaner admitted she stole $13,000 worth of jewelry from a borough home tiffany to support her heroin habit, police said.
Borough police said on Tuesday that 20-year-old Marissa Steve, who worked for Maid Clean, a local cleaning service company, stole various gold rings and then pawned the jewelry for cash.
Steve, formerly of Wyoming, was arrested Monday at a Kennedy Street home in Pittston.
Steve was charged with third-degree felony counts of theft and receiving stolen property, court records show. Borough police filed similar charges against her last month.
Steve remains jailed at Luzerne County Correctional Facility in lieu of $25,000 bail for both set of charges pendants.
According to the criminal complaint:
On Oct. 5, police were requested to investigate an incident of theft involving a cleaning service woman.
A homeowner told police that she noticed several gold rings missing from a glass jewelry box on top of a bedroom dresser of her home and suspected Steve took the items.
Steve began cleaning the home last summer, police said.
Steve and another woman provided cleaning services about seven or eight times in the past year, the criminal complaint states. The homeowner terminated the service after noticing several items of jewelry were missing on July 23.
Police said Steve pawned several gold rings at a pawn shop in Exeter.
Steve admitted to police she was a heroin addict and stole rings from the home to get money for drugs, police said. Steve told police she stole the Money Clip to support a $40-a-day habit.
When police asked why she took two of the rings from the jewelry box, Steve replied, “I thought I could get more money for the gold.”
Steve was arraigned Monday night before District Judge Joseph J. Carmody, West Pittston. A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for Oct. 21.
